1. Key Eligibility Pathways
There are three main streams for the Subclass 186 visa:
-
Direct Entry Stream: For those who have never worked (or only worked briefly) in Australia. Requires a formal Skills Assessment and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
-
Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream: For those who already hold a Subclass 482 (TSS) visa and have worked for their employer for at least 2 years (reduced from the 3 years shown in older documents).
-
Labour Agreement Stream: For those sponsored by an employer with a specific migration agreement with the government.
2. Updated Requirements for 2026
-
Age: Must be under 45 years at the time of application (some exemptions apply for high earners or researchers).
-
English: Must demonstrate "Competent English" (e.g., IELTS 6.0 in all bands or PTE equivalent).
-
Salary Threshold (New for 2026):
-
As of July 1, 2026, the minimum salary threshold (TSMIT) is set to rise to $79,499 AUD.
-
For the permanent residency pathway specifically, many roles now fall under the Specialist Skills Threshold, which is significantly higher (approx. $146,717 AUD).
-
-
Health & Character: Full medical exams and police clearances from every country you have lived in for 12+ months are required.
3. Fees & Processing Times
The Australian government adjusted fees in late 2025/early 2026.
| Category | 2026 Estimated Cost (AUD) |
| Main Applicant | $4,910 |
| Additional Adult (18+) | $2,455 |
| Dependent Child | $1,230 |
| Processing Time | 12 to 20 months (Direct Entry is currently the slowest) |
Note on Employer Costs: Your employer is responsible for paying the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy, which ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 depending on the size of the business. By law, the employer cannot pass this cost on to you.
4. Benefits of the 186 Visa
Unlike the previous visa (491/489), the 186 is a Permanent Visa from day one. It allows you to:
-
Stay in Australia indefinitely.
-
Work and study without restriction.
-
Enroll in Medicare (Australia's public healthcare system).
-
Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residency.
-
Apply for Australian Citizenship after meeting residency requirements (usually 4 years).
