The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residency visa for individuals with qualifications and work experience required to fill Australia’s skill shortages.

This visa does not require employer or state sponsorship, making it one of the most popular migration pathways to Australia.

Applicants must score a minimum of 65 points and have an occupation listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Applicants must be under 45 years of age and meet all eligibility requirements.

Basic Requirements

To apply for this visa, applicants (or their partner) must satisfy the following:

  • Be under 45 years of age
  • Have competent English language skills
  • Hold qualifications relevant to a listed occupation
  • Have relevant work experience
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Occupation must be listed on MLTSSL

Applicants must also pass a points-based assessment. Points are awarded based on:

  • Age
  • English proficiency
  • Skilled work experience
  • Educational qualifications
  • Partner skills and other bonus factors

The minimum required score is 65 points.

Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the online system called SkillSelect. Based on ranking, invitations are issued by the Australian Government.

Note: Submitting an EOI does not guarantee an invitation. If selected, applicants must submit their visa application within the specified timeframe.
